Our History
The
MassGeneral Marathon Team Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at
a Time was established in 1998, and has grown considerably
over the past ten years, raising more than $4 million in support of
pediatric oncology for MassGeneral CancerCare for Children.
Our ten year history:
1998: (our first year) 10 runners raised almost $50,000
1999: 45 runners raised $240,000
2000: 60 runners raised $428,000 and with a matching gift from Adidas America the final total increased to $728,000
2001: 60 runners raised more than $430,000
2002: despite a decline of 20 fewer numbers our team still raised more than $340,000
2003: 64 runners raising $440,000
2004: 87 runners raised more than $595,000
2005: 102 runners raised more than $660,000
2006: 106 runners raised more than $555,000
2007: 121 runners raised more than $584,000
2008: 124 runners currently raising money
These much-needed funds, raised by the runners themselves, fuel innovative pediatric cancer research and help initiate effective new treatments for our patients. Understanding the causes of cancer and improving therapy protocols are just two of the many vitally important ways that your support helps us to enhance the quality and longevity of life for our young patients.
The children treated at the MGH are each fighting their personal
race against pediatric cancer, and the MassGeneral Marathon Team runners
plan to keep running until we beat it ... One Step at a Time.
